Hiking and the "droppings" of life

I was walking along this morning on the Spirit & Truth "Road to Emmaus" hike, just thinking and meditating on the reading and the reflection questions. I was staring down at the pathway trying to make sure that I didn't step in any horse...droppings...and it occurred to me that I was so busy looking down trying to avoid crap, that I was missing all of God's beauty around me. It struck me as strangely accurate to life and faith. A lot of the times, we put our noses to the ground, doing everything we can to avoid discomfort, suffering...basically, all the "crap" in life. But when we do that a few things can be said:

  • You don't look up to see all of God's beauty. I mean, sure, the walkway was pretty, but I wasn't getting the full picture, and the same is true in life.
  • You're going to end up stepping in crap sometimes anyways.

So, it led me to conclude that you might as well put on some boots that can get mucked up and enjoy God's perspective, don't worry about looking down all the time.
